Improve Your Coarse Fishing (UK)

Snobbery is creeping in

- GEOF BENSON, MANSFIELD, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

Like many of your readers, I am returning to fishing after a long time. However, I feel there is a certain amount snobbery creeping into fishing, and I feel somewhat embarrassed at some venues because I don’t have a trailer full of tackle, and the bits of tackle I do have is older, cheaper, and non-big brand. As a golfer for many years, I gradually improved into a low handicap player and eventually purchased some very good clubs, but found that this equipment did not improve my game significantly – it was my swing that let me hit the ball correct. My favourite putter cost £20, and is not a famous brand. But the snobbery and ridicule from certain members and golf establishments soured the atmosphere for me. These people could not beat me at playing the game, but they looked immaculate with the latest and most expensive gear. I’m sure the fish don’t know what make of rod they have been caught on, or that the guy pulling them in is sat amid thousands of pounds worth of rods, poles, reels, seats, bivvies bigger than my caravan, and wrapped up in layers of branded clothing. I carry my tackle in an old fishing box given to me be my son, sit on a camping chair, one of my three rods was an offer when I subscribed to IYCF magazine, with the reel and terminal tackle all at the lower end of the price range. Yet, I have caught some very good quality fish on this tackle and enjoyed every minute. I will not be put off by the few who scoff and jeer at my appearance. We should all be helping and encouraging people to love this sport, especially the younger guys who, like me, may not yet have the best equipment, but simply just want to enjoy this super sport.
