Improve Your Coarse Fishing (UK)

I’ve never fished a large reservoir before but fancy giving one a go as I’ve heard they can be great for silvers. Any advice? JIM LEACH, VIA EMAIL

AThe biggest shoals are often well away from the bank so a feeder approach is generally best on these waters. For bream, a simple groundbait feeder will outscore anything else. Build the swim up gradually by recasting a medium-sized feeder every few minutes. A dark groundbait is always best for bream and skimmers as they are more likely to spook over a light bed of feed. Use a fishmeal-based groundbait because they can’t get enough of the stuff! Also, try adding finely chopped worms and a few casters to keep the fish grubbing around for longer. Use maggots, pinkies or worms on the hook. If bites don’t come instantly, don’t make the mistake of piling in loads of bait in. Instead, try searching your peg – casting 10 yards further could put you on to the fish in deeper water.
