“How tough I expect the fishing to be will dictate the size of lead I use. On days when I only expect a handful of bites from occasional casts I will use 30g-plus, as the fish will almost always hook themselves against the weight. The negative side of a heavier lead is that the commotion caused can sometimes spook fish. When I am catching plenty and casting regularly, I will drop down to a 10g-20g lead to stop the shoals disappearing.”
