Improve Your Coarse Fishing (UK)
PICK YOUR S FLOAT
THERE are literally hundreds of pole float patterns but selecting just a few of them will cover every scenario.
1 OPEN WATER
Big carp will compete aggressively for bait. If they are close to your mainline they will brush up against it and this can lead to foul-hooking. In order to prevent this, a float with a big body and a thick tip is required. A Preston Inline Diamond will only dip when a fish takes the hookbait.
2 OPEN WATER F1s
F1s are much cagier than carp and a more delicate float is required. If you are fishing on the deck then a slim bodied pattern with a carbon stem is ideal. Make sure the tip is fairly fine so that you can spot every little bite.
3 SILVER FISH
If you are fishing a deep water for silver species your float needs to do two things. The first is to remain stable and not be dragged around by underwater tow. A circular body help to achieve this. It also needs to be sensitive and a wire stem will help.
4 MARGIN
A short pattern stops the float interfering with the feeding area in shallow water. The thick tip helps it remain stable when using big baits.
5 SHALLOW
A pattern that sits up in the water quickly is essential when fishing shallow. A bristled float is best to help you read what is happening beneath the surface.
