MARTIN'S SUCCESS STORY

- MARK CASTO, VIA FACEBOOK

As a level 2 accredited Angling Coach with the Angling Trust I have coached families and individuals including those from care homes for over nine years. My introduction to Martin came about when I spoke to his carer Adam when they were fishing at Poringland Lakes where I am head coach. I suggested that Martin would greatly benefit from a structured coaching programme. Adam was keen to help Martin progress with his angling skills so we arranged a first coaching lesson. Our first session was mainly to get to know Martin and understand his abilities and basic needs and it soon became apparent that Martin was having trouble with basic tasks such as handling fish and was nervous about removing the hook. Having worked with autistic residents a care worker in Bristol I understood some of the issues Martin was having and together Adam and myself put together a set of goals for Martin to improve. The goals were specifically set out as long, medium and short-term goals. We have now completed over 20 hours of coaching and Martin's progress has been fantastic. We have now reached the stage where not only does he hold the fish with confidence and handle them correctly but he is able to land the fish and unhook them with a little assistance. Using a white board and visual aids we have made great progress in teaching Martin to recognise and use the correct items of equipment and understand their functions. We are currently working towards the Angling Trust skill awards also known as the Cast Awards. These cover all aspect of angling such as water safety, countryside code and beginner-to-advanced angling skills. For Martin to have achieved such a great deal while clearly enjoying himself is a not only a great benefit to him but wonderful example of how angling can enhance and benefit the lives of those dealing with mental health issues and disabilities.
