NEIGHBOURS EVICTED?
Channel 5 is allegedly poised to axe the Aussie soap…
It’s a sad day in soapland when you wake up to the news that Neighbours is set to be cancelled – but sadly, that’s the rumour doing the rounds at the moment.
A tabloid newspaper claims that Channel 5 is considering whether to renew its bid to air the soap, and the broadcaster is declining to comment. However, a ray of hope has come from Ramsay Street stalwart Alan Fletcher, aka Karl, who’s downplayed the gossip.
“The recent story with Toadie chasing ‘Dee’ in London is probably one of the most successful plots we’ve ever done in terms of audience numbers and interest,” reckons the actor. “It’s absolutely going off at the moment.”
Alan’s comments echo a statement made by the show’s production company Fremantlemedia Australia, which reassured fans who’ve begun an online petition to save the soap.
“Neighbours is a fantastic show, with a legion of loyal viewers around the world,” says a spokesperson. “We enjoy a great working relationship with our broadcast partners, and already have exciting stories planned for next year.”
Meanwhile, the show is looking to the future, having announced that a new clan are set to hit Ramsay Street. Toadie’s brother Shane and his family will be arriving in a few weeks’ time.
