Troubled Sonya hits the bottle…
THE FORMER ADDICT HITS THE BOTTLE…
Most of us would be jumping for joy if we locked lips with handsome copper Mark Brennan – but snogging him nearly sends fragile Sonya over the edge this week!
The woman is in turmoil following the break-up of her marriage to Toadie and the loss of her baby daughter – and Mark making a move on her is the final straw. In fact, it’s enough to push the recovering alcoholic off the wagon…
“It’s incredibly sad, but it makes sense that Sonya has gone back to the bottle,” reckons Eve Morey, who plays heartbroken Sonya. “When I’ve talked to the writers in the past about what could possibly make Sonya go down this road again, I said it would either be the loss of a child or the breakdown of her marriage – so they gave her both! This is the lowest we’ve ever seen Sonya.”
Although Mark has been Sonya’s main source of support since baby Caitlin’s devastating death, she’s never seen him as anything other than a good friend. So it certainly takes her by surprise when he crosses the line and kisses her – but even more shocking is Sonya’s own response to the snog.
“She actually kisses him back for a couple of seconds before she pulls away,” explains Eve. “I think in that moment, there is a distraction from all the pain and grief – but then she gains perspective and realises that this would be a bad move. Especially given that Toadie was always
suspicious there was something going on between her and Mark, and Sonya was adamant that there wasn’t.”
Snogging Mark may not be the biggest crime in the world – after all, her marriage to Toadie is all but over – yet that doesn’t stop Sonya being consumed with guilt. And when she spots some bottles of wine left over from Caitlin’s memorial service, she finds herself too weak to resist.
“All of a sudden, Sonya is feeling very isolated and alone,” sighs Eve. “Not only is she mourning the loss of her child and her husband, but she believes the kiss with Mark has ruined her friendships with both him and his ex-fiancée, Steph. She’s at breaking point, so just decides to start drinking.”
It’s a dangerous path to go down for someone with a history of addiction – so could poor Sonya’s spur-of-the-moment decision have terrible repercussions for both her and her loved ones?
