Neighbours star Takaya Honda talks about David’s daddy issues...

I’ve known from the start that Paul Robinson is my dad,” chuckles Ramsay Street actor Takaya Honda, as he joins Inside Soap on the phone from Melbourne.

His character David has just found out the truth about his father on screen – and what a shock it was for both him and the viewers! But Takaya is delighted to be a bona fide member of the soap’s most legendary clan.

“My initial reaction was, ‘Wow, that’s a great family to be part of !’” chuckles the star. “At the auditions, I got to work with Stefan Dennis [aka Paul], and he was so lovely during that process. I knew it would be great once the truth came out and we were able to work with each other properly on screen.”

While David’s twin brother Leo is furious to discover that his arch-enemy Paul is their father, David is actually enjoying getting to know his dad this week. And it doesn’t seem to faze him that his dear old pa has long been the most hated man in Erinsborough!

“David tries his best never to judge people on hearsay or rumours,” reckons Takaya. “He’s always seen the best in Leo, so he hopes for the best with Paul, too. I think it’s important for these bad-guy characters to have a moral compass in someone like David.”

But getting to grips with his new daddy isn’t the only issue David has to deal with – there’s also the question of coming to terms with his sexuality. So might he finally admit his feelings for Aaron?

“I like spending time with Matty [Wilson, who plays Aaron] on set because he’s super-lovely to work with,” shares Takaya. “So personally I’d like to see David and Aaron have a future. Aaron is the obvious choice for David – but is he the right one?”
