Tegan: pregnant and confused!

AS TEGAN AND NICK’S FLING ENDS IN DISASTER, JESS ELLIS IS HOPING FOR A GENTLEMAN TO SWEEP HER OFF HER FEET…

HOLLYOAKS | Channel 4 TUESDAY

When it comes to a soap love triangle, things rarely end well for the other woman – and no one knows this better than Hollyoaks’ Tegan, who tragically lost the love of her life before they had the chance to become a proper couple! She’s been alone for far too long, and while it’s great to see the quirky nurse putting herself out there again, she’s worth far more than being slimy Nick’s bit on the side.

“I don’t know how he has become such a Lothario – Ben Ryan-davies [aka Nick] certainly isn’t!” jokes Jess Ellis, who plays Tegan. “It’s never a good sign when you’re not someone’s first choice, so I’d definitely tell Tegan to stay well away. She and Nick got chatting at the traffic-light party, then he went and got off with Ellie, and now he’s with Holly and is lying to Tegan about breaking up with her.

“Nick is having his cake and eating it, and Tegan has been lured in under false pretences,” adds the actress. “Not to mention that she’s blind to all the rumours that have been circulating about him! Nick is very selfish and immature, so I don’t think he’s right for Tegan at all, and hopefully soon she’ll be somebody else’s first choice.”

Tegan’s secret fling with Nick has barely got off the ground, and it certainly hasn’t been the passionate affair she was expecting, judging by what occurs this week. First the mortified nurse is interrupted by a curious old man as she waits to seduce Nick at the hospital, then the pair of them are spotted kissing by Zack. And to top it all off, Tegan learns that she’s pregnant with cheating Nick’s baby!

To her dismay, the fella doesn’t want to know and gives her the elbow, spelling another failed romance for poor Tegan. However, Jess is keen to direct a brand-new man in her alter ego’s direction, as she tells us she loves playing out romantic plots on the show.

“I really do!” enthuses the 30-yearold star. “They’re a staple of soap and of life, aren’t they? I loved the Tegan and Ziggy romance because it was a

real ‘will-they-won’t-they?’, and it was great being part of that. Tegan has taken a long time to move on, and I think it’s realistic that she still mentions him. I really try to keep Ziggy alive! At Christmas I like to suggest a reference to him or a picture, and when we were in the Dog I said we should glance towards the chair because that’s where he died.”

In spite of all her bad fortune, luckily the ever-popular Tegan has never had much of a chance to wallow in self-pity, as she’s always been surrounded by a group of gal pals who will gladly go out of their way to cheer her up. Together, they’ve enjoyed many memorable girls’ nights at the Loft, and taken home the hangovers to prove it. The reality isn’t so different away from the Hollyoaks set either, as Jess is lucky enough to call some of her female co-stars her best mates.

“Daisy Wood-davis [who plays Kim] is one of my best friends on the show,” grins the star. “We’re always going out together, and we’ve been celebrating my 30th birthday for two months – it’s ridiculous! I had a party, organised a meal, and then 25 of us went to Benidorm over the bank holiday.

“I have a lot of fun with Kirsty-leigh Porter [who plays Leela] too,” adds Jess. “We honestly think that we’re the most hilarious people ever, and we’re always cracking up at our own jokes. I’m an only child, and now I know exactly what it’s like having a sister because Kirsty-leigh and I laugh so much, but we fight as well. We’re always giving each other Chinese burns!”

Back to the boys, however, Jess informs us that there is a new fella on the horizon for Tegan – “but obviously I can’t say who it is!” she teases. So if she had her way, who does Jess reckon fits the bill as her next leading man?

“And I can pick anyone? This is great!” she chuckles. “Well Ryan Gosling comes to mind, but that’s too obvious. I’ll tell you who I’ve always had a crush on – Alan Davies who plays Jonathan Creek! I’m a real fan of his, so it would be amazing if he could come in as my new love interest.”
