Evie finally gets the happy ever after she’s been dreaming of this week, as she marries her best mate Matt in a romantic country wedding!
It may be a symbolic ceremony rather than anything official, with Summer Bay stalwart Alf acting as celebrant for the smitten pair, but that doesn’t prevent the day from being completely magical.
And with just 24 hours to plan the wedding, all of Matt and Evie’s loved ones pull together to make their big day as joyous as possible…
“It’s a rush to organise – but in true Summer Bay fashion, everyone gets onboard to make it as special as it can be,” grins Philippa Northeast, who plays beautiful bride Evie. “It’s a really simple, pretty country wedding.
The set-up is just gorgeous, with lots of wood and native flowers. It’s a lovely day.”
With Matt and Evie about to set off to start a new life in Vietnam – along with Matt’s little sister Ellie – they’re desperate to tie the knot with their friends and family around them before they leave the Bay. But the ceremony almost doesn’t go ahead after Evie’s Uncle Zac misses his flight home, and she declares that she can’t go through with the wedding without him.
“It’s devastating for Evie, since Zac is her only remaining family member,” explains Philippa. “She feels that if he’s not there, then her Auntie Hannah isn’t there, her brother Oscar isn’t there, and her mum and dad aren’t there, either.”
However, after Zac calls his niece and urges her to go ahead with marrying Matt, the wedding is back on! And we challenge you not to shed a tear as Matt and Evie exchange heartfelt vows…
“Rekindling this flame with Matt has proved to Evie that love does still exist,” shares Philippa. “I was so happy that
it was such a beautiful ending for them, particularly as Evie has been through so much loss and mourning.”
The two of them may be over the moon to be declared husband and wife by Alf, but there’s still plenty of drama to be had before they leave the Bay – after Zac confesses to wife Leah that he cheated on her! Whether Matt and Evie can help them patch things up before they leave remains to be seen – but Philippa tells us that saying goodbye to the show was tough for both her and co-star Alec Snow (Matt).
“It was a really bittersweet ending,” she admits. “It was a sweet storyline to leave on, but it was bitter to leave such a special workplace.”
