Sometimes we watch celebrity travelogues and think, ‘Yes, well that’s all very nice, but isn’t this just an excuse to get a rather glamorous holiday for free?’.

At least with this three-part series we can cross out the ‘glamorous’ part, because Sue Perkins travels just like a normal person. She starts out in the highest mountains on the planet, and doesn’t hide how the altitude has left her breathless and queasy. “This is not how I planned it,” coughs Sue, shortly after vomiting behind a rock.

Sue’s visit to the Hindu holy river is an attempt to understand what it means to modern India, and the environmental challenges that the river faces in the future – but she’d also quite like some spiritual enlightenment if she finds it along the way.
