Scheming Max starts to wobble

HAS SCHEMING MR BRANNING FINALLY FOUND A CONSCIENCE?

- Kate White

Guilt-ridden Max finally shows he has a heart this week – by telling Willmottbrown their deal is off. Having driven Jane out of Walford and manipulated Carmel into a relationship so he can steal council secrets, Max reaches the point where he can no longer bear his own behaviour. Sick of lying to his family and friends, he meets his wicked boss and tells him it’s over, even though it means walking away from his career and potentially losing girlfriend Fi. Max means business – but will he be able to escape this nightmare unscathed?

“Jane was right that there is good in Max – it’s just very well hidden!” quips our Square informant. “He’s spent so long nursing grudges that he’s lost his humanity. But seeing how much Carmel cares for him, and knowing that he’s betraying and humiliating her at every turn, is too much for Max to bear. No matter what it costs him, he can’t do it any more.”

His fake relationship with Carmel has almost outlived its usefulness as Max comes close to getting the sealed council bid information for Weyland & Co. Once that’s done, and they’ve bought the land, Carmel will be of no use to them, and Max can dump her. She will be heartbroken – and if she discovers that he’s been secretly dating Fi all along, it’ll destroy Carmel.

However, having led her up the garden path to get the information for him, Max has a change of heart and tells Carmel that he won’t ask her

for any more favours. Fi can’t believe it, and Luke is quick to report to his father that Max is wavering. So, as Max is set to have it out with Willmott-brown, it’s a nail-biting situation for Fi…

“Willmott-brown doesn’t know that Max is with his daughter, and he won’t be best pleased to find out they’re together,” says our spy. “But before any of that can come up, Max confronts him about Carmel. He’s adamant that he won’t drag Carmel into anything else – it’s too cruel. Of course, Willmott-brown couldn’t care less about her or anybody else in Walford. He plans to get what he wants, and if Max gets in his way, he’s disposable.”

Despite her fury at her lover’s antics, Fi can’t bring herself to give up on Max. As he arrives at Carmel’s place to break up with her, Fi attempts to stop him – and it’s not long before the passionate pair are in each other’s arms in poor Carmel’s house!

Later, when they are summoned to see WillmottBrown, Max and Fi have some explaining to do about their relationship. Can they stay together even as the plan is falling apart?
