Love is in the air for Damon…
JACOB ROBERTS TALKS TO US ABOUT ALTER EGO DAMON’S RELATIONSHIP WOES…
Cheeky barman Damon knows how to have a good laugh – and his on-off love interest Ellie hasn’t looked this happy in a long time. Yet while the pair are clearly drawn to each other, they haven’t managed to get their act together when it comes to a proper relationship. Things look more hopeful after Damon asks Ellie to be his plusone at Dirk and Cindy’s wedding – but as we grab actor Jacob Roberts for a chat, he warns us that there’s another bump in the road for the lovebirds…
Is Damon interested in a fullblown relationship with Ellie?
I think so. He’s smitten with her! Damon falls in love quite easily, and in his view Ellie’s the one… at the minute! It could change, and I’m not sure he’s mature enough for a relationship yet.
It must be a possibility after the romantic breakfast they have together this week…
Well, that doesn’t go to plan! The sausages are off, they both get food poisoning, and it’s not very attractive to be honest. Ellie throws up and rushes into the toilet, where Damon’s sitting with his pants around his ankles! I don’t know if they can get past that situation.
Was it embarrassing filming that?
I thought it was hilarious – I loved it. Damon was supposed to come in as this hunk, but ends up pooing himself on TV! Working with Sophie [Porley, who plays Ellie] is always really fun. We can take the mick out of ourselves, you see, and she has quite laddish banter. I hope that Ellie and Damon will always remain friends, no matter what.
Are viewers shipping the two of them?
We’ve had some good feedback. Ellie had such a hard time after Nick, so I think she needed a fun guy. But maybe she needs a Damon before she can move on to someone else?
Perhaps it would be better for Damon to stay single – we can’t have him neglect
Brody!
Brody will always get in the way of Damon’s relationships, because Damon has too much time for his mate! Brody doesn’t fall in love as easily as Damon, but who’s to say he won’t get into a relationship first? I’d be excited for them to have their own place and see what they get up to at home. It’d be less bachelor pad, more 14-year-old’s bedroom!
Happily, you’re spending more time in the village now Damon is working at the Dog. What’s that been like?
Oh, it’s great! Me and Adam [Woodward, aka Brody] worked at the Duke Street Social for a while, and it’s quite small so we didn’t get much to do. The Dog is a much bigger area, and we have more space behind the bar and can improvise a bit.
It’s a great set, and a great place to work.
Has Damon’s position behind the bar taught you any skills?
Adam and I did get put on a bar flair course for half a day, and we learned some moves. Things like being able to juggle and catch things behind your back, which I’m terrible at anyway, so when we’re filming we might need to do it a few times. Eventually it looks good, so no one needs to know how bad we are at it! My mum bought me a cocktail maker I haven’t used yet, but at least I’ll look like I know what to do if I try it out…
You’ve been in the show for a while now. Have you been recognised anywhere unusual?
Yeah, I went to Tenerife with my girlfriend and was getting in a rubber dinghy to go down this waterslide. I got recognised by this guy, and as soon as he asked,
“Are you in Hollyoaks?”, they pushed me down the slide! We all burst out laughing because I didn’t get a chance to continue the conversation. I’m getting recognised more in Liverpool, too. I think people like Damon because he’s not evil or nasty – he’s just a bit of a bloke sometimes!
