Glenn uses Cindy

GLENN’S SONS MAY NOT BE HIS BIGGEST FANS ON SCREEN – BUT LUCKILY FOR BOB CRYER, HIS REAL-LIFE FAMILY IS MUCH MORE SUPPORTIVE...

- Sarah Ellis

We’ll admit that it’s taken us a while to get used to the fact that Glenn Donovan has had a face transplant – especially as it’s coincided with us also finding out that he’s actually one of the biggest bad guys Hollyoaks has ever seen! But the fact that he can give Grace a run for her money and still have time to charm the pants off the likes of Diane and Simone has left us wanting more.

When we chat to actor Bob Cryer, who took over the role of Glenn before Christmas, he tells us that playing a bad guy is “the most fun role I’ve ever had” – and that he loves being half of Hollyoaks’ latest power couple…

What did you think of Glenn when you took over the role?

The thing that interested me the most was that he’s somebody who, on the surface, seems like a nice family man with a few wrinkles round the edges. We think he’s just got to straighten up his act a bit and make things right with his boys – but then we learn he’s up to his neck in all sorts of stuff!

How do you feel about him and Grace being such a naughty pair?

I think it’s brilliant! Grace is capable of scaring the living daylights out of any character, so it’s great that Glenn doesn’t seem fazed by her. He can hold his ground with her, and I’m enjoying that. You never know where you are with either character – and they don’t know where they are with each other!

Do you think Glenn really loves Grace, or is he just playing games?

That’s a very good question – and I’m not sure Glenn knows the answer! As an actor I think he does love her, but of course his instincts are to fight that. He’s very macho, so he’d hate the idea of admitting that he loves someone. Though why put yourself through all of that unless there was some kind of deep-seated attachment?

But if that’s the case, why does he make a move on Cindy this week?

That’s just the way Glenn and Grace roll! Boredom is a real nuisance for them, because it gets them into trouble. As soon as they start to feel stable in a relationship, they both want to do something to mess it up. Taking off with someone else to annoy the other one seems pretty much fair game, so I think Glenn does it just to get back at Grace.

How important is family to Glenn?

This is a question I’ve been asking myself – is Glenn a genuine family man, or does he just love control? He certainly wants to keep his family close. I think it’s partly about winning back the children who he feels he’d lost for a long time – but ultimately it’s about controlling their decisions.

What feedback have you had from the viewers about Glenn?

I think people are really enjoying the fact that he’s a proper villain with actual underworld connections. They like the way that Shane has come into the story, and they’re seeing that this empire is starting to spill over into other families in the village. And there’s a lot more of that to come…

What do your own family think of you being in

Hollyoaks?

I have three daughters who are 10, 12 and 15 – so as you can imagine, they’re having to field a lot of questions from their friends about what’s going to happen in the show! But they’re very excited about it, and also fascinated by the fact that

I’m playing a father to boys – it’s a window into what could have been! However, as to whether they think I’m a cool dad now, I couldn’t possibly say. I’ll leave that up to them to judge!

Is Glenn a genuine family man, or does he just love to control?
