UNDER THE KNIFE!

WILL AIDAN’S KIDNEY SAVE HER LIFE?

- Sarah Ellis

Carla and Aidan’s lives hang in the balance this week, after they’re taken into theatre for their kidney transplant operation.

As you can imagine, the whole Connor clan is on edge as they prepare themselves for what lies ahead. So will both Carla and Aidan come through the surgery unscathed – or could there be heartache in store for Carla’s loved ones if the transplant isn’t a success?

“This is a major operation, so inevitably it comes with some degree of risk,” admits our Coronation Street source. “But although Aidan knows he’s putting his own life on the line, he’s determined to go through with it for Carla’s sake. Without this procedure, she’ll die – and Aidan really wants to be the one to save her.”

When Carla first arrived back on the cobbles, she was desperate to keep her kidney failure to herself. Her close friend Roy was the only one she confided in – but as her condition grew worse and she became increasingly ill, Roy persuaded her to tell her family what she was going through.

Carla’s half-siblings Kate and Aidan were both keen to help, and got tested straight away to see if they could be donors. Aidan was happy to find out he was a match, and didn’t hesitate in offering Carla one of his kidneys. It was a bittersweet moment for Carla – because while she doesn’t want to see her little brother go under the knife, she knows it’s her only chance of survival.

However, as the pair arrive at the hospital to get prepped for surgery, the reality of what they’re about to go through starts to hit home. Johnny and Kate are by Aidan’s side as he’s wheeled up to theatre, and Carla isn’t far behind him.

As they wait for news from the surgeons, Johnny and Roy share stories about Carla, and both confess how much she means to them – but all they can do is hope and pray that everything goes to plan…

“This really is Carla’s last chance, so if the operation isn’t a success then it’s curtains for her,” sighs our informant. “In reality, this transplant is just the beginning for Carla and Aidan – there’s a long road to recovery ahead for both of them. And Carla really has to hope that her body doesn’t reject Aidan’s kidney, because if it does, then she doesn’t have very many options left.”

Meanwhile, as Carla and Aidan arrive back from theatre, Carla stuns her family with a massive announcement. What does she have to say – and has the surgery gone without a hitch?
