This medical drama set during the American Civil War returns tonight for its second season (also its final season, following the programme’s cancellation by broadcaster PBS in America), and picks up pretty much immediately in the wake of last year’s finale. The staff of Mansion House Hospital make a shocking discovery and have to act quickly to save one of their own, while an outbreak of smallpox leads to a rift between Jed and Mary.
