TASKMASTER | Dave WEDNESDAY

The Bafta-nominated series of barmy challenges returns this week, and this time the tasks set for the contestants will be even more demanding.

“We do try to step it up!” reveals series creator Alex Horne, who is also the show’s umpire. “We want something different – a new layer. So I feel a bit of pressure! These five people will be in your living room for the next 10 weeks. You really hope people will get on board with them very quickly, but the chemistry between the contestants is quite unspecific. You want some sort of rivalry, some friendships, and moments of friction.”

Each series of Taskmaster brings together five new contestants, none of whom have any idea what they’re letting themselves in for. Our five innocents for this series will spend the next few weeks battling each other to be crowned Taskmaster champ. So let’s find out more about the hopefuls…

“[BBC Radio 1 DJ] Alice Levine brings a brain – she’s highly intelligent,” says Alex. “But unfortunately, she’s exceptionally bad at physical activity! [People Just Do Nothing star] Asim Chaudhry is very loveable, though he has bad instincts for what might work in any situation. [Actress] Liza Tarbuck has the most unusual brain I’ve ever seen on

Taskmaster. She’s very interesting.”

The final two contestants for this series are comics Russell Howard and Tim Vine.

“Russell is a little sort of squirrel,” reckons Alex. “He has too much energy, and he can’t sit still! Tim is the definition a good British eccentric. He’s silly but competitive – the perfect Taskmaster contestant.”

As ever, the man setting the contestants their challenges is the Taskmaster himself: Greg Davies. We hear he can be a loose cannon once the cameras start rolling…

“He’s getting harder to rein in,” chuckles Alex. “I really like sitting next to him, but our relationship in the show is getting weirder. His scoring system is getting more frustrating, too – and the logic is as wild as ever!”
