Casualty Bea’s bender

Michelle Fox tells us about alter ego Bea’s worst-ever day at work…

- Sarah Ellis

We’ve all turned up for work a bit worse for wear at some point – but spare a thought for trainee doctor Bea this week, who’s so drunk that she’s brought into the ED after a night out on the lash! And as actress Michelle Fox tells us, her alter ego has never been so humiliated in all her life…

How embarrassed is Bea about the state she’s in?

On a scale of one to 10, it’s an 11! She’s afraid of people seeing her like this because she thinks she’s superwoman, so this is devastating. She’s bashed her head and broken her ankle, and she’s been laying out in an alley all night. She’s in a bad way.

Bea has clearly been affected by the dressing-down Ethan gave her last episode…

That’s hugely affected her. Bea’s an excellent doctor, but her confidence has been really knocked – she thinks she’s finished at the hospital.

We’ve seen hints that all is not well with Bea’s home life. Are we set to find out more?

Yes, there’s an episode coming up where Bea’s work and home lives collide in a shocking way. We’ll see where Bea has come from, and that will answer a lot of questions people have about her. There’s some emotional stuff coming up which was interesting to shoot.

What do viewers make of Bea?

What’s nice is that she’s polarising – people either love Bea or say that she drives them insane, and that’s really the essence of the character. People see her as being quite arrogant, but she has a good heart.

Who have you bonded with most at Casualty?

I’m really good friends with Neet [Mohan, who plays Rash] and Chelsea [Halfpenny, aka Alicia]. But I also have a really lovely friendship with Will Beck [Dylan], which people find unusual! We just have very similar personalities, so it’s always a laugh hanging out together.
