Sophie asks Carmel for help

AS THE MOTHER OF HER SON’S KILLER REACHES OUT, CAN CARMEL FIND ROOM IN HER HEART FOR FORGIVENESS?

- Allison Jones

Albert Square plays host to a blazing row this week, after Sophie – the mother of Shakil’s murderer, Bruno – arrives on Carmel’s doorstep and begs for her help!

Unsurprisingly, Carmel refuses to speak to Sophie, and is quick to send her packing – but she later walks into the middle of a furious showdown between the woman and Keegan. As Sophie confesses that Bruno has asked to see Carmel, can the grieving mother be persuaded to face her son’s killer?

“At first, Carmel wants nothing to do with Sophie – and who can blame her?” explains our Walford insider. “It’s still just a matter of months since Shakil was stabbed to death by Bruno, who’s currently in jail awaiting trial for murder. Keegan was also very nearly killed by Bruno and his gang, and it’s only when he confronts Sophie that Carmel is forced to intervene. But she’s still not prepared for Sophie’s anxious request that Carmel visit Bruno in prison…”

Sophie finally comes clean about her motives when she returns to the Square to plead with Carmel a second time. Claiming that she’s being targeted by a local gang after reporting them to the police, all hell breaks loose as the same mob arrives hot on her heels – forcing Kush and Martin to chase them off when they cause a scene. “Sophie’s terrifying predicament is made clear once the gang arrives,” shares our spy. “It’s enough to prompt Carmel to change her mind about helping Sophie, and she invites the desperate woman to stay. fuming when he finds out, concerned that his mother is putting herself at risk. Even so, she’s bravely determined to do the right thing.”

However, Carmel’s resolve is put to the ultimate test when Sophie admits that Bruno has asked his mother to bring Carmel to see him in jail. She’s initially appalled by the idea of coming face to face with the heartless killer who robbed her of her beloved Shaki, but she eventually agrees. As she braces herself to confront Bruno, is she right to give him the time of day – or is she set to make a terrible mistake?

“Carmel starts to believe that an audience with Bruno might give her some kind of closure,” suggests our sneak. “Until he’s officially convicted of his crime and sufficiently sentenced for murdering Shakil, Carmel can’t rest. But she’s also determined to try to understand the motivation behind this gang violence, in the hope of bringing such ruthless attacks to an end.”

Surely Bruno’s intentions can be nowhere near as honourable as Carmel’s – so what does he hope to achieve by meeting with her?
