Blast From The Past: Steve Huison (Corrie’s Eddie Windass)

Former Corrie star Steve Huison tells us that he has no plans to return to the cobbles right now…

- Sarah Ellis

The last time we saw layabout Eddie Windass, he was leaving his partner Anna, and heading off to Germany to start a new job. But when we catch up with former Corrie star Steve Huison – who played the lazy fella – and ask him what he reckons Eddie might be doing these days, he says it was a miracle Mr Windass ever found employment in the first place…

“I thought it was a bit implausible that he’d gone abroad to graft when he was work-shy!” he chuckles. “I can’t imagine that he’s holding down a job still – maybe that’s a story in itself! Wherever he is now, though, his hair might have fallen out a bit more.”

The cobbles are a dim and distant memory for Steve, who said goodbye to Corrie back in 2011. And although his screen family has been at the heart of the drama recently – most notably when Anna faced off against serial killer Pat Phelan – Steve admits he doesn’t keep up with the goings-on in Weatherfield any more.

“No, I don’t tune in – and funnily enough I’ve no idea what happened to

Anna!” he tells us. “Would I ever go back? That depends. If they got in touch and I was free, and the storylines were interesting, then I’d never turn down work. But it depends on what else is going on in my life.”

Right now, Steve’s far too busy to head back to soapland, as he’s just kicked off a nationwide tour of the play, They Don’t Pay? We Won’t Pay! at York’s Theatre Royal. And although the play was originally written in the 70s, Steve reckons it’s still very appropriate for modern-day audiences.

“It’s about inflation skyrocketing, so people can’t afford the food in shops any more,” he explains. “I actually first saw this play 35 years ago, when I was a student, and it had me falling about laughing! The good thing about it is having licence to update it with whatever’s pertinent.”

While our readers may recognise Steve from his Corrie days, he tells us that it’s another role he gets asked about more when people approach him on tour.

“I don’t get recognised as Eddie very much,” admits the actor, who also teaches portrait drawing. “Sometimes people come up and ask me when he’s coming back, but I have no idea! I tend to get recognised more for The Full Monty

[Steve played Lomper] than I do for

Corrie. I can tell when the film has been on TV, as I’ll get recognised for a few days afterwards!”
