Ken begs Sinead to come clean

CAN SHE FIND THE WORDS TO TELL DANIEL THE TRUTH ABOUT HER CANCER?

- Tom Spilsbury

Ken piles the pressure on to Sinead this week, imploring her to tell Daniel the truth about her cervical cancer diagnosis. However, when Daniel calls into the café, he finds Sinead in tears, and demands to know what Ken has done to upset her!

Ken is put in an impossible situation when he has to choose between respecting Sinead’s wishes, or letting his son know about his wife’s true condition. Although he keeps quiet for now, he begs Sinead to tell the truth, or else things will be worse in the long run. Struggling to carry his burden, Ken turns to Claudia, confiding in her that Sinead has cancer, but is unable to let Daniel know.

Later, Sinead suffers a dizzy spell, resulting in Daniel telling Ken that he’s worried about his wife’s wellbeing. Will

Ken crack and tell his son what he knows?

Inside Soap caught up with actor William Roache (aka Ken) to find out how his alter ego is coping with his no-win dilemma…

Hello, Bill! Now Daniel and Sinead are married and expecting a baby, is Ken happy for them?

Yes, after the trials and tribulations with Daniel’s mother, he’s happy that Daniel has found love. Everything is looking rosy… but this is Coronation Street!

Considering the bad blood between them, has Ken resolved any ill feelings between him and Sinead?

Yes. Last year, Ken did this terrible thing and virtually persuaded Sinead to have an abortion, which was awful. It would be understandable if Sinead never forgave him, but they have repaired things.

Does Ken now accept that Daniel and Sinead are right for each other?

Totally! Ken was worried that Daniel would never find happiness, so he’s delighted to see that Sinead has given him some balance. He’s completely reversed all his opinions on Sinead, and he’s grown very fond of her.

How does Ken react when Sinead breaks down and tells him what she’s going through?

Sinead doesn’t confide in him voluntarily – he puts her in a position where she has to tell him. He becomes her confidant, even though it wasn’t through choice.

What does Ken think Sinead should do?

He wants her to talk to Daniel. He says, “You must tell him, you can’t keep him out of this.” But Sinead says, “It’s my baby, my body, my cancer”. She begs Ken to keep quiet, though it’s really difficult for him. He wants to do the honourable thing, yet this is his son’s life.

Are Ken’s loyalties torn?

Completely! All his instincts are saying to tell Daniel, but he also wants to honour Sinead’s feelings. It’s a terrible dilemma. She has cervical cancer and has to choose whether to have the full treatment and terminate her pregnancy, or to have a more gentle treatment where the baby might survive and so could she. But that’s a massive risk. It has to be her choice, yet whatever Ken does now will upset someone. It’s heartbreaking.

How would Daniel feel if he finds out Ken kept quiet about this?

I would say that if Ken keeps this from Daniel, it could completely shatter their relationship forever!
