Sonya meets up with Andrea

EVE MOREY LIFTS THE LID ON SONYA’S BATTLE…

- Alice Penwill

I’ve really come to care for Sonya, so filming these scenes has been so awful!” reveals Neighbours actress Eve Morey, who plays Sonya, as we chat with her about her upcoming episodes.

Sonya had a hellish time at the end of 2018, having been poisoned and left for dead by evil Alice. And this year has been no kinder to the Ramsay Street favourite, following the awful news that she is suffering from stage-four ovarian cancer.

“There are parallels to my life in Sonya’s,” shares Eve. “I’m a mother of two young kids, and I couldn’t imagine going through something like this. The scenes were difficult, but at the same time there are lovely moments throughout, and this story gives us all a different appreciation of each other.”

The Rebecchis are visited by Andrea’s lawyers this week, as their arch-nemesis wants full custody of Hugo! So despite her illness taking its toll, Sonya decides to go down to the psychiatric ward in Hobart and confront Andrea face to face.

“Sonya just doesn’t have time for this any more,” explains Eve. “She heads there and talks to Andrea as one mother to another. Sonya just wants what’s best for Hugo, and he needs a mother who puts him first and loves him. That’s Sonya’s greatest concern.”

After Sonya’s visit to Andrea, she then decides the time has come to reveal her diagnosis to her neighbours – who are all devastated, to say the least.

“Sonya tells people because of the pressure that the situation is putting on Toadie,” sighs Eve. “It’s manifesting in anger towards Karl, Shane, Dipi – he’s not dealing with it, and the whole Rebecchi family needs help.

“As much as Sonya doesn’t want to reveal her illness, because it makes it real, she realises they need support to get through this,” continues the actress. “People don’t take it well, though – they’re in shock.”

One Erinsborough resident takes the terrible news particularly badly, though – and that’s Mark Brennan.

“Oh God, Mark!” exclaims Eve. “Poor Mark. It brings back a lot of emotions for him about Kate [Ramsay] and baby Caitlin. I hear about everything that Mark’s going through and I think, ‘Poor man’! That guy just needs to have a big cry.”

With Sonya receiving the terrifying diagnosis that she has ovarian cancer, Eve informs us how much research she has done, along with the writers and producers of the show.

“We all want to make sure that we’re portraying everything in the most honest and truthful way,” says Eve. “Ryan [Moloney, who plays Toadie] and I have put in a lot of work in order to get to the emotional and psychological truth around people who are going through this. This storyline means a lot to many people, and it’s a really wonderful thing to be a part of.”
