Actor Alex Norton tells us about his dream viewing…

-

I think Father Ted is one of the best TV comedies that’s ever been made

– and I say that as a huge Bilko fan, you know, The Phil Silvers

Show. I didn’t think anything would ever exceed Bilko in terms of writing, but Father Ted is fantastic. Every time I go back and watch an old episode, it’s just as funny – if not funnier.

The last thing I watched that I was really into was Killing Eve.

I was completely knocked out by it. I thought it was so well-crafted – the writing was great, the subject matter was attentiongrabbing and, for a subject that’s pretty dark and grisly, I thought they managed to balance it with the humour that was there through the whole thing.

I watched the movie Phantom Thread recently,

which I hadn’t expected to like very much. My wife said, “We should watch this Daniel Day-lewis film, it’s about a dressmaker,” and I thought, “What do I want to watch that for?!” So I started watching it out of solidarity, but after five minutes I was hooked – I’ve seen it twice now!

I’ve seen quite a few true-crime documentaries on Netflix.

The last one was The Staircase, about a guy who allegedly shoved his wife down the stairs and murdered her. It grips me, because it puts you in the position of having to judge. And as an actor, watching how real people behave in situations like being arrested or appearing in court is very instructive. You learn so much about how people really behave…
