THE ROAD TO HELL?

PHOEBE FOX STARS IN A POSTAPOCALYPTIC RACE FOR FREEDOM…

-

In the not-too-distant future, nobody is allowed out after dark because of vicious mutant creatures that prey on unsuspecting humans. It’s a grim existence, but once a year an illegal nocturnal road race takes place, organised by a reclusive billionaire who offers the winner sanctuary on his private island. Is it real? Who knows – but there are plenty who will take that chance. Inside TV chatted to Phoebe Fox, who plays paramedic Kaye, one of the racers…

“Kaye is all heart and soul,” says the star. “She’s the dramatic anchor of the show, and she’s sort of an unwilling participant in the race. Her impetus is different – it’s never just been about winning the race, it’s about freeing herself from the shackles of her life. She’s quite an emotionally dark character!”

Kaye’s vehicle of choice is her own armoured ambulance – which proved to be quite a challenge for Phoebe…

“It was absolutely terrifying – I only learned to drive last year!” she admits. “There’s been loads of stuff where they’ll say, ‘Just drive up and lean out the window and press the button like you would in a car park’, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ve never done that’!”

The role of Kaye is quite a change from Phoebe’s other recent jobs in period dramas such as Life In Squares and Close To The Enemy – and she tells us that’s one reason she was really up for taking on the part.

“I’m normally in a corset, so running around with a gun is really fun!” she grins. “My favourite line is, ‘I don’t want your help, I just want your bazooka’. It’s very Bruce Willis!”
