SINK OR SWIM
ANNA FRIEL, ROSALIND ELEAZAR AND SINÉAD KEENAN STAR IN A NEW LAKE DISTRICTSET DRAMA…
Set against the backdrop of the Lake District, there’s something very soothing about the scenery in new six-part drama Deep
Water. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is going to be cosy, comforting television. Appropriately enough, danger lurks just below the surface…
The series follows three women, Lisa Kallisto (Anna Friel), Roz Toovey (Sinéad Keenan), and Kate Riverty (Rosalind Eleazar), who have children of around the same age and know each other from the school gates. All of them are facing their own problems behind closed doors…
“It’s quite a dramatic start to the first episode,” teases Rosalind. “The Rivertys are on a day out with the Kallisto children, and it goes horribly wrong. Kate and Lisa have a very interesting relationship – I think Kate is, in some ways, envious of Lisa’s lifestyle. She seems to have a tight, loving family that maybe isn’t happening at the Rivertys’.”
However, Kate’s perception of what Lisa’s life is like may not be so close to the truth, as Anna explains.
“Lisa looks after 20 dogs, so she spends her whole day between school runs, walking people’s dogs and dropping them off,” she reveals. “She had dreams of being a vet, but life took over. She hasn’t had a haircut in about 10 years and is usually covered in sawdust! Lisa and her husband Joe are like ships in the night, and I think she’s starting to get a little bit bored with life.”
As for Roz, she’s the main bread-winner, and struggling to make ends meet due to her partner Winston’s huge debts.
“By all accounts, Roz is good at what she does and very successful,” points out Sinéad. “But unfortunately Winston has a gambling problem, and through various means he’s lost everything. She had to close her private practice, they had to give up their home and move into a smaller cottage – they’re under a lot of financial strain.”
While their characters are all experiencing hardships in one way or another, the three stars were very happy to get to spend their working days on location in the Lake District.
“When I’m filming Marcella,
I have a two-hour commute there and back,” explains Anna. “It was 15 minutes today – normally it’s five! Everything’s really close by, so when I get back I’ll get my wellies on and take Maggie [Anna’s dog] up to the mountains and walk. I find it really peaceful. I had a yoga class in the woods last night – that was amazing!”
“There’s loads to do,” adds Sinéad. “I’ve got two boys, so when they came to visit we went to The World Of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Windermere. We’ve also been on a boat trip and a steam train…”
However, there was one small aspect of filming that
A DAY OUT WITH THE CHILDREN GOES HORRIBLY WRONG”
ROSALIND
kept all three on their toes
– the good old British weather!
“It changes so drastically!” laughs Rosalind. “You start with sun, then it’s fog, then torrential rain… I don’t know where else you’d get every single weather condition within seven hours!”
