BEN UNWIN 1977-2019

Former Home and Away star Ben Unwin, who played Jesse Mcgregor from 1996 to 2005, was tragically found dead at his home on 14 August – the day before his 42nd birthday. The star won considerable acclaim for his portrayal of Jesse, and was nominated for a Logie Award and National Television Award in 1997. Jesse was one of Home and Away’s most popular characters of the era, and the role was written especially for Ben. He was involved in some high-profile storylines, and Jesse was falsely imprisoned for burning down Alf’s bait shop. After leaving the soap, Ben gave up acting and trained as a solicitor.

“Police attended Minyon Falls, Whian Whian, responding to a concern for welfare,” confirmed NSW police in a statement. “The body of a 41-yearold man was located. The death has not been treated as suspicious.” “I just woke up to the tragic news of Ben’s passing,” said Ada Nicodemou, who plays Leah, with whom Jesse had a brief romance. “My heart goes out to his family.” Kimberley Cooper, who played another of Jesse’s love interests, Gypsy Nash, also paid tribute to her former co-star: “We had years of laughter, be it giggles on set trying to get through scenes as lovers, or doubled over belly laughs at the pubs after work,” wrote Kimberley on Instagram. “I will be sad for now, but I promise to tell stories of great joy about our times together. You forever hold a special place in my heart. Love you, Onion.”
