Gemma is left fuming this week, when Chesney rumbles her mum Bernie’s pregnancy test scam – just before Bernie is then arrested for shoplifting! But the person who collars them turns out to be no stranger to mother and daughter…
For weeks, Bernie has been secretly harvesting Gemma’s urine in order to create positive pregnancy tests to sell on dark corners of the internet. While the enterprise is disgusting, it’s also effective – as Bernie now has money in her pocket and insists on taking Gemma shopping for maternity clothes. However, the day out for Gem and her mum ends in disaster, when Ches cottons on to Bernie’s wee scam…
“Amazingly, it’s taken Gemma and Chesney this long to realise that Bernie is up to no good – she’s hardly subtle!” laughs our
Corrie insider. “It takes detective Ches to put all the clues together, and it’s a pretty disturbing case to crack. But a large collection of positive pregnancy tests gives him the evidence he needs to throw the book at Bernie. Although when he calls Gemma, she’s out with Bernie in the middle of their shopping trip.”
Chesney’s news not only leaves Gemma completely appalled and furious, but she’s also hurt that her own mother would use her like this. In a fit of fury, Gemma lets rip and gives Bernie both barrels in the middle of the shop. As her mum slopes off, the alarm sounds and suddenly security guards rush to the doors. It seems as though Bernie has items she hasn’t paid for in her possession – and the store’s staff wants to talk to her!
It looks as if Bernie’s luck has run out, with Gemma now fully aware of her antics and store detectives on her case. But she is stunned to realise the security man is a familiar face. Kel is Bernie’s ex-partner, and a man who played stepfather to her kids for several years. Bernie immediately thinks she can sweet-talk her old flame. But will Kel be convinced to let Bernie go with a caution?
“There doesn’t seem to be bad blood between the pair – in fact, Gemma appears thrilled to see Kel and greets him like an old friend,” says our spy. “It doesn’t take her and Bernie long to get Kel to release them without charge. He seems very pleased to see them too, and Gemma’s stunned when he turns up at their front door later.”
Bernie invites Kel into the house and explains to Gem and Ches that he’ll be staying to enjoy a ‘thank you’ meal. The bemused duo set the table and resolve to give Kel a hero’s welcome. Will Kel end up sticking around long enough to be reacquainted with Bernie, Gemma and her brother Paul?
