Casualty Mason tries to impress

LIFTS THE LID ON MEDIC MASON…

- VICTOR OSHIN Sarah Ellis

Starting your first proper job is always a nerve-wracking prospect, especially when said job is in a busy emergency department of a hospital. However, trainee doctor Mason Reede hasn’t done himself many favours in his new position, as he’s refused to listen to the orders given to him by his superiors, and blamed his many mistakes on his colleague, Rash. When we sit down for a chat with

Casualty newcomer Victor Oshin, who plays gung-ho Mason, he reckons his alter ego is just desperate to impress…

“Mason wants to be the head of the pack, he always wants to be seen in the best light,” explains the star. “He just wants to be the best doctor he can be, and he’s not scared of who he hurts on the way to the top! He’s definitely sprinting before he can walk.”

Although Mason hasn’t done much to endear himself to the viewers so far, this week’s episode aims to give us a glimpse into what’s really going on inside the young medic’s head.

“We’ll see a whole week in the life of Mason, and the stresses he goes through,” reveals Victor. “We meet his family – he’s the apple of their eye, so the pressure to keep that up really takes its toll on him. That’s part of the reason why he always wants to be the best.”

Whether the audience will be any more accepting of Mason by the end of the episode, we’ll have to wait and see. But Victor reckons that his character will have to start being a bit nicer to Rash if he’s to win round the viewers!

“The reactions from viewers have been fun!” chuckles the actor. “I’ve had a few people saying, ‘Just leave Rash alone!’ I’ve realised just how much people love Rash, so they’re definitely quite protective of him.

“Mason just needs to relax, and stop skipping the basics,” adds Victor. “It’s a collaborative effort – Mason thinks

he can do everything by himself, which is not working. He definitely needs to start listening to instructions, rather than doing everything his own way.”

Mason may not have found his feet in the workplace, but Victor tells us that he’s having a ball at Casualty. And thankfully, he gets along with co-star Neet Mohan, who plays Rash, much better than Mason gets along with his fellow junior doctor.

“Working with Neet has been amazing, which is good as most of our scenes are together,” he enthuses. “We play a lot of table tennis in the studio between scenes. And Jason Durr [David] is an absolute beast at table tennis. I haven’t won a game against him yet – it’s quite annoying!”
