Tony’s dad Edward turns up
BUT WHY HAS EDWARD ROCKED UP IN THE VILLAGE?
Tony’s dad, Edward, arrives in the village this week, much to the shock of everyone – especially Diane, who sends him on his way! But why has Edward appeared now? And what does he want?
“Edward’s estranged – there was a messy divorce,” says
Hollyoaks newcomer Joe Mcgann, who plays him. “His wife told him to stay away, but he didn’t want to. Edward was not completely absent, though – it comes out later that he used to spy on them from time to time. One of Edward’s aims is to restart a relationship with his son and, more importantly to him, his grandchildren.”
Edward’s plans are thrown, however, as his daughter-in-law immediately sends him packing!
“Diane only knows what Tony has told her,” explains Joe. “Which is that Edward was a bad father, and abandoned him. As Tony’s wife, she’s going to take sides, isn’t she?”
But Edward doesn’t give up, and turns up outside Diane’s flat the next morning. He begs for another chance, and while Diane has second thoughts, Finn is suspicious of him.
“Edward is a little bit of a narcissist,” Joe tells us. “He wants power and autonomy wherever he is, and perceives Finn as a threat to the family dynamic. He knows about Finn’s past too, and believes he’s an unstable character.”
Later, when Edward turns up at the Dog, he makes a big impression on Marnie and Cindy, who are both smitten…
“Edward’s a bit of a charmer,” grins Joe. “He sees these two beautiful women and they kind of play up to him. Given what we know about Edward, there’s probably a bit of loneliness in his life – he’s been married, and now he’s on his own.
I’m not sure if he’s looking for long-term romance – I think he might like
conquests…”
Despite Edward’s attempt to patch things up, Tony is still missing – held hostage by Breda at the pig farm! But if he were to escape, could they reconcile?
“There comes a point in your life where you want to put things in order,” explains Joe. “So I think Edward would want to take the opportunity to at least open a conversation. Whether it’s an apology or an explanation, he’d definitely want to talk to his son.”
Even though Edward might come across as a charmer,
Joe tell us there’s more to his alter ego than first meets the eye. Hollyoaks has revealed that Edward is set to be the show’s big new villain through the show’s 25th anniversary next year, and Joe promises his character will cause a stir…
“You have to really watch Edward,” he reveals. “There’s always more than one level going on. He has the ability to be charming on the surface, but extremely Machiavellian underneath. Never take what he’s saying at face value – he always has an ulterior motive…”
