You Ask… Gary Lucy (Luke)

GARY LUCY Hollyoaks’ Luke Morgan ...faces your questions!

-

Luke is struggling to regain the respect of his neighbours after his part in the crane crash, so let’s hope his alter ego Gary has an easier time as he answers your questions...

“What was it like starring in

Footballers Wives?”

It was amazing! I’d just left Hollyoaks the first time when I did it, so I was only young and it was an amazing opportunity. It was a completely bonkers show that caused an absolute storm – none of us knew what we were letting ourselves in for! I made some fantastic memories, and recently there’s been

a few calls from people to bring it back. It’s always lovely to bump into cast members at different dos. Susie Amy [Chardonnay Lanepascoe] was on Hollyoaks for a little while as my ex-wife [Scarlett Morgan], which was fantastic – that was two years ago, and she has a little baby now. The cast aren’t in touch every week, but it’s lovely to catch up with them – it was a mental time for all of us – and be a bit nostalgic.

“Gillian Taylforth was your mum on Footballers Wives, and she was mum to Ashley Taylor-dawson [Darren] on Hollyoaks – do you compare notes?”

[Laughs] I can’t say we do! But I just love Gillian, she’s amazing. I didn’t know she played Ashley’s mum actually, but I worked with her on The Bill too, so she’s more my mum than his! She’s just a breath of fresh air. She’s an amazing woman, and I absolutely love her energy. She’s a lovely person to be around – a real professional who brightens everyone’s day.

“What was the best thing about doing Dancing On Ice?”

The fitness aspect was amazing. I mean, there was no choice – and you didn’t want to go on the live shows not knowing what you were doing. The live tour was fantastic too, it was a lot of pressure for someone who’s not a natural, or a trained ice skater. I still go once a year to an ice rink to prove

I can still do it!

“What would your dream day off involve?”

Somewhere hot with the children, in a swimming pool

“What’s it like to work with Gillian Taylforth?”

somewhere. Not really relaxing – you can’t relax with them! – but that would be my dream day right now.

“What has been your favourite Luke storyline over the years?”

The most memorable storyline for me would be the male rape story – it was the first time that the topic had ever been covered. I was only young and it was a huge opportunity for me. I also really enjoyed being part of the Buster and Ollie story – and supporting young Aedan [Duckworth, aka Ollie]. I have a story coming up that’s a big one too…

“Who do you think is better for Luke – Mandy or Cindy?”

Well, I think as it plays out, it will be Cindy. We know Mandy was Luke’s first love, but I think there’s too much water under the bridge. Cindy’s been so good for him – strong, colourful – and Steph [Waring] is fantastic to work with.

“If you could play another

Hollyoaks character for a day, who would it be and why?”

It’s such a difficult one! I reckon it would be Tamara Wall’s character, Grace. Or Marnie, or Mercedes. I know they’re all females, but they all have that little bit of fabulous about them – not to say the others haven’t. And I quite like camping it up!

“What do you think about becoming an on-screen grandad?”

Oh, I think it’s fine for Luke to be a grandad – but for Gary to be a grandad would just be weird. I think he’s pretty young to have a grandchild, but, you know, I’ll embrace it – even more babies to work with!

“You also starred in

Eastenders – what was that experience like?”

It was great! I played Danny Pennant and came in to ruff le a few feathers – I enjoyed it. Eastenders is such an iconic show, so it was great to be a part of it.

“What’s the best thing about having Aedan as your on-screen son?”

I was with him in his audition, and was so impressed. Aedan’s like a sponge

– he wants to improve and learn, and

I’m so proud of him. He has a big career ahead of him. I’m like his dad off screen as well, I put as much of that into my relationship with him – he hates it when I cuddle him! I’ve been on a journey with him, and I love him.

“Have you had any strange fans?”

When I first started out in Hollyoaks, someone wrote in going, “Meet me in this bar”, with a picture of her and her nanny! Then I got another letter: “You obviously didn’t get my last letter – meet me at the bar at this time”. Of course, I didn’t turn up, so after a few more letters, I finally got one saying, “Gary, it’s over. Tell Marcus Patric [Hollyoaks’ Ben Davies], I’ll be writing to him”! I showed it to Marcus and went, “Good luck!”

“How is it having Aedan as your screen son?”
