Getting married to someone you’ve only been on one date with isn’t generally a good idea – especially if he can’t even recognise you without your shoes on – but fairy tales play by different rules. Or do they? David Walliams has co-written a follow-up to the classic story that shows us what Cinders and Charming’s “happily ever after” might look like…
“We wanted to question those things – kids are doing that these days, aren’t they?” points out David, who also plays the Prince in the one-off special. “We’ve made Cinderella a strident, strong woman and not a victim of her circumstances, but balanced that out with making it entertaining, so we weren’t bashing the audience over the head with it.
“The thing about these stories is that you can reflect the time you’re in,” he continues. “Fairy tales get retold so many times, you don’t have to be slavish to one version. In fact, this is a sequel, so that gave us even more licence to go wherever we wanted!”
Siân Gibson takes on the coveted role of Cinderella, and reveals that she had a very important consultant on board to help her prepare for it…
“My daughter Gracie is a massive fan of David’s work. I showed her the script and I could hear her laughing from the next room!” she shares. “I’m a little bit older than the normal Cinderella – I thought it was a joke when I heard that I’d got the part! But obviously it’s a dream – what middle-aged woman doesn’t want to play Cinderella with David as Prince Charming?”
