Actor and comic Ardal O’hanlon picks his dream viewing…
I wouldn’t say I’m up to date on comedy, but The Young Offenders has its charms.
And Derry Girls is brilliant – I was in it! It was just a cameo role, but I’m a big fan of the show’s writer, Lisa Mcgee, and when she asked me to do it I didn’t hesitate – even though I didn’t know what the part was! It’s lovely to spend time around young people in a successful show, with all of their enthusiasm.
I was fairly gluttonous with my viewing in my hotel room, when I was on
tour! Succession was my absolute favourite thing I’ve seen in the past two years, I loved it. Despite
The Virtues the fact that Death
In Paradise is quite light and not in any sense gory, I’m drawn to very dark programmes, and I love the black themes and absolutely savage wit in
Succession’s writing.
I loved the first series of Big Little Lies, and The Virtues, with Stephen
Graham, was incredible. I think that was an example of TV at its best: it illuminated things that no journalism could. The notion of repressed memory was so well conveyed in that show.
Marriage Story is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen; it’s fantastic.
The Irishman, not so much – it’s a little bit tedious. I’m a huge fan of Martin Scorsese, but I was underwhelmed.
I’ve never wanted to wait for the phone to ring, so I always get out there and do my own thing.
I love documentary film-making; I do it in my spare time. I feel like when one door closes, another opens, so we’ll see what happens!
