Cain has no plans to forgive Moira

EMMERDALE’S JEFF HORDLEY RECKONS HIS ALTER EGO IS STILL IN NO MOOD TO FORGIVE…

- Kate White

It’s been a great start to 2020 for Emmerdale, with a Serial Drama win at the NTAS, while its huge ‘Who Killed Graham?’ twist was still making headlines. As the baddest boy in the Dales, it was quite incredible that Cain Dingle wasn’t even on the suspect list for Graham’s shocking demise. Yet although his alter ego steered clear of the drama, Jeff Hordley (aka Cain) was one of the very few people who knew that Pierce was the killer!

“I knew about it because Jonathan Wrather, who plays Pierce, was staying with our family when he started filming!” reveals Jeff, who is married to Zoe Henry (Rhona). “I loved it! Johnny is a really good friend of ours, and it’s great to have him back. He’s brilliant value on screen, and even more so as a person around the building. As a cast, the only sad thing was that this plot meant we had to lose Andrew Scarborough [Graham], who is an incredible person and actor.”

Graham’s demise is being keenly felt across the Dales, but Emmerdale fans have been mourning a Cain-related loss for even longer. The death of his marriage to Moira has been as hard for viewers to accept as it has been for the couple themselves. So when this week offers the slightest glimmer of hope that Cain still cares for his estranged wife, we’ll be holding on to it with both hands.

It’s so typically Cain and Moira that the incident which puts them on the same side for once involves big drama, with a gun and a potential murder (see p18). But this has never been one of the soap’s most conventional love stories…

“All I can say is that there’s a definite change for Cain after this gun incident,” teases Jeff. “I think Cain’s been putting on a mask for the past few

months, but then we all wear masks every day. Cain just can’t forgive Moira for what she’s done, basically. I think he’s trying to put on this brave face, because he’s had to cope with her betrayal and the double-edged sword of that being with his son.”

So while the pair work together this week, Cain might not be open to a reunion. However, as Jeff reveals, Moira and the audience will hope that this could be the thing to thaw Cain’s cold front.

“From speaking to people on the street, it seems they want Cain and Moira back together,” he says. “But I can’t see it happening in the near future! I think viewers understand why Cain can’t reunite with Moira. It’s all too raw and unbelievable, especially as Nate is his son. There are so many emotions going around Cain’s head and he just wants Moira out of his life. Yet he can’t have that, because they have kids together.”

It looks as if there’s a long way to go before Butlers Farm is a happy family home once again – but Jeff reckons the climax of the affair plot was the highlight of his 20year Emmerdale career.

“Filming the payoff on the boat and

underwater were two of the best days that I’ve had on the show,” he enthuses. “The divers and film crew were incredible, and they gave Natalie J Robb [Moira] and I the confidence to do things out of our comfort zones. The sense of achievement was massive!”
