Maxine in serious debt to Liam
Hollyoaks star Nikki Sanderson tells us that Maxine could be forced to take drastic action to make ends meet…
God bless Maxine, she’s not had many laughs recently, has she?” groans
Hollyoaks’ Nikki Sanderson, as we look back on what’s been a bleak couple of years for her alter ego. “I hope that at some point she can be happy. I do feel sorry for her, because she’s lost all of her friends, she’s lost her job, and she’s living in a cold flat. Everything has just gone really badly for her!”
Sadly, Maxine’s luck doesn’t look set to change any time soon. She’s hit rock bottom thanks to the lies she told – and now, on top of everything else, Liam Donovan blames her for his brother Jesse’s death! And his quest for revenge is going to lead Maxine down a very dark path indeed…
“Liam’s been offering Maxine help – with a smiley face, but a wicked heart,” teases Nikki. “He’s pretending that he’s doing everything with the best of intentions, when in fact he has an ulterior motive.
“Maxine was originally asked to entertain a business acquaintance of Liam’s, serve him drinks, make him laugh – and she earned money from that,” adds the star. “But as viewers have figured out, Liam is set to suggest to Maxine that if she wants to make more money, she’ll have to take that entertainment a little bit further! Maxine would be shocked and hurt if she knew what he was really planning.”
Liam’s already helped out Maxine with a job and some cash, as his wicked revenge plan gets under way. But when Maxine is threatened with eviction this week, Liam is given the perfect opportunity to turn his nefarious scheme up a notch.
“When the landlady comes knocking on the door, Maxine is really scared,” admits Nikki. “She’s been ignoring the bills and burying her head in the sand, because she just doesn’t have the money to pay her rent. But then these heavies come around and start taking everything from the flat, and Maxine’s only option is to try to scrape some money together somehow.”
When Liam swoops in and offers Maxine a job at the salon, she’s grateful for his help. He goes one step further by buying her new furniture for the flat, as well as a stunning new dress. However, while
Maxine happily accepts
Liam’s gifts, she’s in for a rude awakening once he later makes it clear that she’s
now in serious debt to him – and he expects her to pay back every penny! So when Liam does finally reveal his dark and devious plan to her, will Maxine be made to do the unthinkable in order to make ends meet?
“She could be desperate enough,” reckons Nikki. “She’s backed into a corner – she needs to be able to earn that kind of money straight away, to pay the landlady and get the heating back on. Everything she does is for her daughter Minnie, to keep a roof over her head and put food in her belly. There’s always a choice in life, but Maxine has had that choice taken away from her.”
It’s an appalling situation for anyone to be in – and sadly, Nikki can’t see any other way out for her troubled alter ego…
“If I was advising Maxine, I’d tell her to speak to someone and get help,” she reasons. “But because Maxine is now known as such a compulsive liar, if she tried to reach out for help, who’s going to believe her? She’s lost all credibility because of the lies she’s been telling for the past year. So she really is in an incredibly sticky situation.”
