Gemma locks the quads indoors

CAN SHE FACE HER POST-NATAL DEPRESSION AS EVENTS OVERTAKE HER?

- Sarah Ellis

Worried Bernie orders her daughter Gemma to see a doctor this week, convinced that the stressed mum is suffering from post-natal depression.

Given that she’s a first-time parent with quads to look after, it’s no wonder Gemma feels overwhelmed. But when she locks herself out of the house while her babies are still inside, Gemma flies into a blind panic – and Bernie senses that this is more than just the baby blues…

“Bernie may not have been the best mum over the years, but she’s determined to be there for Gemma now,” insists our Corrie spy. “It’s clear to her that all is not well with her daughter, especially when

Gemma says that she believes she’s an unfit mother. It’s at that point Bernie realises her girl needs professional help.”

It’s not just caring for four babies that’s making Gemma stressed. She was devastated to find out that her son Aled is profoundly deaf – so when she wakes from a nightmare about hurting her son, it’s no wonder Gemma is in distressed state.

The poor mum’s day gets worse as health visitor Julie calls round, and tells her that little Llio has lost weight, so Gemma needs to increase the milk she’s feeding the child. The news leaves Gemma shaken, but as Julie quizzes her about her mental state, Gemma claims she’s coping just fine.

Yet it’s clear she’s hiding her real feelings when Gemma later becomes overwhelmed by her babies’ crying, and steps into the backyard for some fresh air – which is when she ends up locked out! Bernie arrives to find her daughter in a terrible state, and after she helps Gemma break down the door so she can get to her babies, the worried nan tells her girl that she must go to the doctor.

“Bernie can see Gemma’s exhausted,” admits our sneak. “She offers to move back in so she can help with the children, but Bernie knows that’s not enough. She pushes Gemma into making an appointment with Dr Gaddas – yet it’s clear Gemma’s not that keen to go.”

As Bernie marches Gemma to the surgery, her daughter continues to insist that she’s coping. It falls to Bernie to tell Dr Gaddas what’s really going on – but will struggling Gemma admit that she needs help?
