DUTCH DELIGHT

EMMA FIELDING AND MARC WARREN TELL US HOW THEY’VE ENJOYED THEIR AMSTERDAM ADVENTURE…

-

The return of Van Der

Valk has been a hit for ITV, and its third and final episode airs this week. Crossing our fingers for more adventures with the Dutch detective, we spoke to Marc Warren (Van Der Valk) and Emma Fielding (who plays his boss, Julia Dahlman)…

Hi, guys! We love Van Der Valk, but is he going to cheer up any time soon?

Marc Van Der Valk reflects the energies of Amsterdam – its tolerance and liberalism. He can be a loner, and at times he might come across as a little taciturn or moody, but he has some stuff going on. There’s definitely a sadness there, and by the end of the third episode, we’ll get to find out why that is…

Emma He and Dahlman have a back story, which doesn’t become clear until episode three. Something happened and he feels responsible for it.

There’s great chemistry between him and Hassall…

Marc Yes, he does get on well with her. They’re close – nothing more, though. She’s always trying to get him to find love! She’s the only person that might have a go at him when he’s being hard on

people. But sometimes he’s just in his own world.

And he’s clearly also fond of Dahlman’s dog, Trojan…

Marc I love dogs, so it was great to interact with him on set. When you’re acting with a dog, you forget about anyone looking at you. Everything you aspire to do as an actor, the dog just does naturally! It’s nice that Van Der Valk shows a warm side. He feeds Trojan too many treats, which Dahlman doesn’t like!

Emma Yes, she frowns upon that! You never really know how a dog will react, but she was absolutely brilliant.

How did you both enjoy filming in Amsterdam?

Marc While I was living there, I walked everywhere, and got to know the city a bit more.

It’s very beautiful, and such an interesting place. But I was mostly working, so only really scratched the surface.

Emma Whenever I had a day off, I walked for miles! The finale was filmed on what used to be an oil rig, but is now a fancy restaurant overlooking the river outside the Courts for Justice. It was extraordinary, and hopefully that atmosphere comes through in the show…
