My Telly HEAVEN!
We chatted to the rising star of Medici: The Magnificent to find out which TV shows would make his perfect night in…
What’s your favourite kind of programme to unwind in front of?
Anything with David Attenborough in it. My younger sisters would go for a reality show, but they’ve never clicked with me. Give me a flying fish any day!
Which drama have you been watching most recently?
I’ve just discovered Life On Mars – I was too young to watch it when it came out. I think Philip Glenister is so charismatic as Gene Hunt. It doesn’t take itself too seriously – I’ll have to carry on with the sequel, Ashes To Ashes next…
What about comedies?
During lockdown I should be watching new stuff, but I’ve been returning to old comforts like Arrested Development
– it’s one of my favourite shows, it’s so clever.
What’s it like to be part of a major production such as Medici?
The locations we filmed in were stunning – Italy is such a beautiful country. And working with the likes of Johnny Harris and Sarah Parish – actors I’ve loved in so many other things – has been amazing!
Did you like your character Giulio de Medici’s period costume?
Yes – putting on four layers of felt with a big crucifix across your chest really helps you to get into character! They glued my sword into its holster, though, because I kept taking it out to prod the crew while they set up scenes, much to their annoyance!
Which of your favourite shows might you like to star in?
The Thick Of It: I’d love to have a swearing contest with Malcolm Tucker – that really appeals to me!
What’s your most memorable show from childhood?
I was a huge fan of the BBC series of Robin Hood: I recall the music vividly. I worked with Richard Armitage in The Stranger last year, and still had a grudge against his character, Guy of Gisborne, for killing off Maid Marian, my childhood sweetheart!
