The best of ENEMIES!

IN REAL LIFE, THE WARRING METCALFES HAVE NOTHING BUT AFFECTION FOR EACH OTHER…

- Laura-Jayne Tyler

Congratulations Shelley and Ian for all your hard work on this storyline. How does it feel to bring it to an end? Shelley

I just feel so privileged and honoured that me, Ian, and the Nazir family have been given the responsibility of exploring this storyline. I feel very humbled, and I hope that we’ve done it justice.

Ian

It’s an incredible privilege, and I can’t wait to see it all play out on screen. The fact that the 60th anniversary has come at such a significant point in our story makes me feel remarkably honoured – but we mustn’t forget that Yasmeen will have to deal with the effects of her time with Geoff for the rest of her life, so it’s not the end of the story in any way.

You have a wonderful friendship. Did that help get you through some of the trickier moments in filming? Ian

Absolutely. It’s not been fun playing Geoff, but Shelley and I trust each other, and we’ve had to go to some dark places – and it’s been especially tough for her. Watching Shelley crumble as Yasmeen has been tough.

Whatever the outcome of the trial, do you think we’ll see a very different Yasmeen, Shelley? Shelley

She will never be quite the same, but for a major part of her life she was this capable, courageous, sometimes bombastic woman – but always generous of spirit. I think that will always be there, and it will just take some time to regenerate.

Let’s end on a happy note! What are your best memories of working on Corrie? Shelley

I’ve been very lucky to work with Street legends like Malcolm Hebden [aka Norris], Barbara Knox [who plays Rita], Sue Nicholls [Audrey], and Eileen Derbyshire [aka Emily Bishop] – all the people that I’ve been watching ever since I came to this country just before my 10th birthday. It’s been epic.

My enduring memory was parking my car on the first day and thinking, “Blimey, I’m in Coronation Street, the most iconic TV show”! I was terrified. I had scenes with Barbara and Sue, whom Shelley mentioned, and they couldn’t have been more generous, welcoming and fun. I was acting with Corrie royalty, and it couldn’t have been any more memorable.
