“Diane needs to be alone for a while”

Alex tells us what she really thinks about her alter ego’s life choices…

What’s it been like for you being stuck between these two gorgeous men, Alex?

I’m not being funny, but it’s exhasuating! I wish someone would give poor Diane a break. I have to take a deep breath before I read my scripts these days, because I’m like, “Oh, my goodness, what’s going to happen next?” But it’s brilliant and dramatic, and I love that.

Are you still holding out hope that Tony and Diane might get back together?

It’s not looking good at the minute, is it? She’s shacked up with his dad, and I don’t know whether they can ever bounce back from that. I do love working with Nick [Pickard, who plays Tony], though, so it would be nice for our characters to be back together. I also love Joe [McGann, who plays Edward] – plus Eva O’Hara, who plays Verity, is an absolute dream. We make a good little team.

What advice would you give to Diane about her current predicament?

The first thing I’d say is, “Leave your father-in-law alone! Just put him down! Stop it!” She’s blinded by him, but it’s wrong on so many levels. What she really needs is a good girlie holiday, or a break away with the children and Scott. She should basically get away from men and be on her own for a little while.

We’re loving your new red hair! Are you enjoying it?

I love it, too! It’s given me a bit of a lift. You get sick of looking at yourself, don’t you? I had the option of a wig, but I remember that when Anna Passey [Sienna] had one, she had to be in make-up at 6am every day, and that just doesn’t work when you have kids! I’d been a redhead before, so I knew it would suit me. It’s very exciting!

So will you keep it, then?

Well, with the current situation, I’m having to do my own colour – which is a bit of a challenge! So it’s easier for me to just maintain the red for now…
