There’s embarrassment in Erinsborough this week, when Clive and Jane wake up in bed together following a drunken night of passion!
The horrified look on Jane’s face says it all, as she realises she’s crossed the line with one of her oldest friends. So how did this shock hook-up happen?
“It’s such a surprise – who’d have thought it?” chuckles
Geoff Paine, who plays Clive. “There are some Christmas celebrations going on, and I think it’s the eggnog, to be honest. One thing leads to another… and another!
“There’s a lovely ‘morning after’ scene that carries on throughout the episode,” he adds. “They’re both ashamed and hungover, and neither of them has a strong memory of what’s happened. They try to be calm about the whole thing, but they’re really not!”
While this unexpected turn of events comes as a shock to both Clive and Jane, there are bigger questions to answer than whether or not they regret their actions – such as, how do they stop Sheila finding out?
She has been desperate to win back Clive, so if she were to find out he’d spent the night with Jane, she’d be devastated.
“Sheila is a fearsome force!” admits Geoff. “Clive and Jane don’t know what to do: should they fess up? Can they explore what’s happened without setting off a landmine? There’s that awkwardness of getting to know someone and talking about your feelings, which takes on a different hue when you’re in your fifties.”
As a long-time fan of Neighbours, Inside Soap reckons Clive and Jane could make a good match. And Geoff tells us that Clive would definitely like to explore this potential new romance…
“He does have feelings for Jane,” he reveals. “They have a lot in common, but it’ll be interesting to see if Clive can make it work with that kind of soul mate, as opposed to the ‘opposites attract’ thing he had with Sheila: that explosive, fiery spontaneity.”
Whether or not the pair become Ramsay Street’s next hottest couple remains to be
seen, but Geoff tells us he’s been having a good laugh filming these scenes alongside co-star Annie Jones (Jane), who he’s known for over 30 years.
“It was great,” he grins. “We felt like teenagers – we spent more time covering up than exposing anything! There’s some funny stuff coming up as Clive and Jane do plenty of weaving around to avoid Sheila. There are a lot of bushes to spring out of and doors to hide behind!”
