My Telly HEAVEN!
As the Chasers reassemble with show host Bradley Walsh for a second series of Beat The Chasers, Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan reveals her telly faves…
Hi, Jenny! What’s the best thing about being a Chaser?
It’s the best job in the world, involving two of the things I love most: quizzing and television – and a bit of showing off! It’s a privilege working with Brad. He cares about the contestants – and winding us Chasers up! Beat The Chasers’ new series has some of the most nail-biting games we’ve seen…
What have you most enjoyed watching on TV recently?
His Dark Materials. I’ve loved the Philip Pullman books for years, and it’s breath-taking to watch such a lush and faithful adaptation. Also Corrie – I was absolutely glued to the dramatic 60th anniversary episodes!
What about your favourite comedies?
I’m a huge fan of US sitcoms like Parks And Recreation, The Good Place, and 30 Rock.
I don’t think it’s a huge coincidence they are all female-led! And Schitt’s Creek, which I’ve been making everybody I know watch over lockdown.
What were your favourite shows growing up?
I was a bit of a square eyes as a kid. I was six when Going For Gold started, and that was me hooked on quiz shows. Another interest was crime and mystery – me and mum would make pizza and watch Bergerac, Inspector Morse, or an Agatha Christie. I also loved Crimewatch!
What about cartoons?
I was very into Postman Pat, because of Jess the cat. I was also hooked on Bagpuss, because I was (and still am) a crazy cat person! But my favourite was SuperTed.
What was the last show you binge-watched?
I’m always bingeing something. I hate being spoilered, so I do my best to get things watched! I was straight on to series four of The Crown. And University Challenge and Only Connect are on permanent series-link. I always watch with my parents, as we all love to quiz!
If you could be in any other television show, what would it be?
As a strong Northern woman, I’d love to be in Corrie as a battleaxe! Or maybe I could take over from Jeremy Paxman when he hangs up his University Challenge boots – my first ever TV appearance was on the quiz in 2002, competing for Leeds University…
