Jean’s cancer has returned?

IS HER NIGHTMARE BEGINNING ALL OVER AGAIN?

- Laura-Jayne Tyler

This is the agonising moment when Jean crumbles in hospital – convinced that her cancer is back. It was on Christmas Day that Jean pulled on a new top, and felt a lump in her breast. Stacey’s mum soldiered on, and went so far as to rally the Slaters for a merry evening in the Vic. But as reality dawns on Jean this week, she breaks down…

“Jean has been through countless rounds of treatment and lost her soulmate Daniel to the disease – so the very last thing she needs is to go through this hell all over again,” points out our Walford insider. “There is only so much the poor woman can take.”

Meanwhile, Mo makes plans for her and Jean to attend Dotty’s party, and sets her heart on an afternoon of beautifying for the pair. However, Jean has other plans, and heads to her appointment at Walford General, where doctors will take a biopsy.

Jean is clearly in a state of panic, although her consultant insists she shouldn’t worry until they have the results of the test. However, after Jean’s emotions get the better of her, she doesn’t hang around long enough to find out – and flees the ward before the staff can even carry out the procedure!

Later, back on the Square, Jean has a conversation with Iqra at Dotty’s bash, which reveals the truth behind her decision to flee. Jean admits to Iqra that she’s choosing to “live in the now”, before confessing to deleting voicemails from her doctor.

“Jean’s had about as much as she can take and, quite simply, she doesn’t want to know any more,” explains our source. “However, if Jean

continues down this path, she potentially stands to become very sick if her illness has indeed returned. It could even prove fatal.”

The trouble is, Jean has already convinced herself that it’s bad news. So rather than put herself through a process that she believes is only delaying the inevitable, Jean accepts her fate and forges a plan of her own.

But what if it turns out that Jean’s cancer hasn’t returned? And if a cruel twist of fate deems that it has, how will the Slaters cope with her decision?
