TOGETHER AGAIN

DAVINA McCALL AND NICKY CAMPBELL ARE REUNITING MORE FAMILIES AS THE SOUL-STIRRING SERIES RETURNS…

- Lynn Gibson

During a time when so many of us have found ourselves temporarily separated from our loved ones, the reunions taking place in the BAFTA winning documentary series Long Lost Family – which returns for a tenth series this week – feel more poignant than ever. “In the first episode, there’s a couple called Kevin and Phyllis, who had a son when they were just teenagers, and he was adopted against their wishes,” shares Davina. “They’ve spent the past 40 years looking for him: it’s an incredible story.”

“I went to Spain to meet their son Sean, who’s now called Reuben,” adds Nicky, talking of the footage that was filmed pre-pandemic. “It was intensely personal for me because his story was so similar to my own adoption. “Seeing the hugs is so powerful,” muses Nicky. “But, actually, the lack of hugs will be powerful, too. That tells its own story.”

“Yes, I really feel that with everything that’s gone on, the idea of physical contact is so intense,” agrees Davina. “I know we can hug people in our bubbles, but it’s not the same as when you see someone who needs a cuddle and you can just do it. So, being able to enjoy this new series is a gift. It’s like a light at the end of the tunnel, because it’s where we are going back to…”
