BURIED SECRETS
NICOLA WALKER AND SANJEEV BHASKAR ARE BACK AS THE DETECTIVES TRYING TO UNCOVER ANCIENT HISTORY…
It’s been almost three years since we last saw DCI Cassie Stuart and DI Sunny Khan, but hoorah: Unforgotten is back! The acclaimed police drama, in which historical crimes are solved, has won a legion of fans since its 2015 debut
– not to mention two BAFTAs.
This fourth series opens with (you’ve guessed it) a gruesome discovery. A dismembered body is found in a scrap metal yard, and it seems it’s been stored in a freezer for more than 30 years. The victim is identified as a man who went missing in 1990, but as the detectives hunt for his killer, they find a number of possible suspects. And while there are plenty of twists and turns to come over the next six weeks, the two lead actors are giving nothing away…
“I’m pretty good at keeping secrets!” chuckles Sanjeev Bhaskar (Sunny). “I’ve never played much poker, but maybe I have a Ludo face? People always ask for hints and clues, but it’s better just to watch it all unfold.”
“I do worry that
I might say something which would spoil your enjoyment of it,” adds Nicola Walker (Cassie). “I get this awful feeling that I’ll accidentally blurt out who the killer is! But this time, even our execs said to [writer] Chris Lang not to tell them who it was, because they wanted to find out as the episodes came in.” When we last saw Cassie, she’d had a breakdown, and we were left unsure as to whether she’d return to work. With her dad, Martin (Peter
Egan), suffering from dementia, it’s no wonder that Cassie has been feeling overwhelmed.
“It’s breaking her heart,” sighs Nicola. “It makes her relationship with her father very different this time. Peter and I were very close from the beginning, so to do those scenes where his illness has accelerated… Cassie has so much happening, as well as her problem with the force.”
Meanwhile, Sunny is worried about his best pal, but will the prospect of a new mystery for them to solve entice Cassie back to the job?
“He’s undoubtedly missing her,” agrees Sanjeev. “Both as

a colleague and as a friend. So, when Sunny mentions what they’ve found, and asks Cassie for her thoughts on it, he knows that she can’t help but engage with it. It’s like me and éclairs – if you dangle one in front of me, I’ll go for it!”
“Cassie is Cassie,” shrugs Nicola. “Once she gets on the case, she says she’s not going to get emotionally involved and is just going to do her job. But that just isn’t the person she is! That’s not how she’s ever conducted herself. She actually ends up getting deeply involved, because that’s the only way she knows how to do her job…”
