Harriet panics over the gravedig

MALONE’S FORMER RESTING PLACE IS EXHUMED…

- Sarah Ellis

Harriet is terrified that her murderous secret will be blown open this week, as the grave where Malone’s body once laid is finally exhumed!

The vicar has been fighting against the coffin being dug up, for fear of what may be discovered, but her protests have been in vain, and work commences in the cemetery. But what secrets will be unearthed in the process?

“This is Harriet’s worst nightmare!” declares our Dales spy. “Although Malone’s body has long since been removed and relocated to a shallow grave up at Home Farm, the fact remains that he was buried in this plot for quite some time. So, there could still be some forensic evidence that he was once there.”

It was the news that the grave was to be dug up that finally tipped guilty Harriet over the edge, and she’s been struggling to keep her composure ever since. She’s lobbied the bishop to cancel the exhumation, and leave the man who rests inside the coffin in peace. Yet there’s been nothing she can do to put a stop to things, and Charles confirms to her that the procedure is due to go ahead the very next day.

As the exhumation gets under way, Harriet tries to keep watch over what’s happening – although with the grave screened off while the workmen dig, there’s not a lot for her to see. She desperately hopes that they won’t discover anything suspicous, so when Charles approaches to ask if she’s okay, Harriet finds it hard to keep her emotions in check.

There could still be evidence that Malone’s body was once there…”

He can see how upset Harriet is, as she yet again voices her strong disapproval that this atrocity has been allowed to go ahead. As Charles leads a prayer for Richard – the man inside the coffin – Harriet is clearly desperate to be left alone with her own thoughts, as her mind once again begins to spiral.

However, when the digging suddenly grinds to a halt, as the foreman is startled by something unusual in the grave, Harriet freezes in terror. Could this be the moment that Malone’s murder is finally uncovered?

“This situation is totally out of Harriet’s control,” points out our mole. “She has no idea what’s been found inside that grave, or what ramifications it might have for her, Dawn and Will. If there’s evidence that another body was in there at some point, she knows it’s only a matter of time before the local police kick off a massive investigation…”

Later, Will is shocked to read what Harriet has written to him in a letter. Is time running out for everyone involved in Malone’s gruesome murder?
