JON ASKS DEIRDRE TO RUN AWAY TO VENEZUELA – BUT SHE HAS OTHER IDEAS…

-

CLASSIC CORONATION STREET | ITV3 MON-FRI

There are none so blind as those who will not see – so the old proverb runs. Now, we’re not suggesting that Deirdre Rachid has problems with her eyesight, far from it – with lenses like hers, she can spot fleas on a dog on the far side of the Red Rec. No, what Deirdre has is a kind of wilful blindness. In the past, she has refused to see what is plainly obvious to those around her – such as, for example, that her latest true love Jon is a full-blown con man and embezzler, and as much an airline pilot as the lead singer of the Village People is a New York police officer.

Of course, the scales have now fallen, and Deirdre’s dreams have come crashing to the ground. It’s pure tragedy, but that doesn’t keep pompous Ken from rubbing her nose in it. Happily, the Baldwins take pity on Deirdre – with Mike and Ken coming to blows again – and give her a place to stay. Mike even saves her from doing something drastic; hiding her tablets when Deirdre considers suicide.

The drama ramps up when Jon comes calling, and tells Deirdre that everything he did was for her. He suggests they run away to Venezuela together, but Deirdre – perhaps realising how badly her glasses will steam up in downtown Caracas – merely plays along, and phones the police on the sly. However, Jon smells a rat (well, it takes one to know one) and soon turns the tables. Later, Deirdre is horrified to learn that their case is going to court – with Ken as star witness for the prosecution!

Elsewhere, in one of soap’s less-likely plots, Spider continues his campaign against the stocking of Norwegian prawns at Firman’s, and lovestruck Toyah joins the fray by pouring antifreeze into the chest freezers. It doesn’t get her far, alas, and her nose is put out of joint when Spider introduces his girlfriend: Log. You don’t meet a lot of Logs, do you?
