Has Isaac been misdiagnosed?

Stevie Basaula tells us why Isaac is questioning his medical diagnosis…

- Sarah Ellis

Isaac finally comes clean to Patrick about his schizophrenia this week – and after Patrick tells him more about his late son Paul, it gives Isaac food for thought. Actor Stevie Basaula tells us what’s on his character’s mind…

We’ve realised that Isaac is really against Patrick taking part in the trial for stroke medication – why is that?

It’s the uncertainty of it all – from the information Isaac has read on cases similar to Patrick’s, he believes that Patrick is very high risk as he’s much older and he’s black. He’s worried about discrimination, and ultimately losing another father.

We’ll also see Isaac shaken up after he hears details of his half-brother Paul’s death… When he first learnt about his new family, he didn’t know what exactly had happened to Paul – so to find out he was murdered, and it had almost been ignored because of Paul’s troublesome history, is rather hurtful.

What makes Isaac decide to tell Patrick about his schizophrenia?

Patrick’s plea to Isaac, asking him to be open with him is what sways it. Isaac always felt that it was the right thing to do – but he was told otherwise by Sheree. So, Isaac sees this as an opportunity to be honest.

And soon Isaac considers that his schizophrenia may have been misdiagnosed…

Yes, the idea that Paul was misunderstood gets Isaac thinking about his diagnosis. The possibility of what some may describe as a ‘normal’ life appeals – a life without schizophrenia. So if he has been misdiagnosed, he’s desperate to know

– and he makes a very risky choice to test out his theory…
