THE HIT US COMEDY MURDER-MYSTERY RETURNS…

- Lynn Gibson

We are back inside the Arconia – an exclusive apartment building in New York – where recently ostracised residents Charles, Oliver and Mabel attempt more murder-solving and podcast recording as season two kicks off…

Who are you talking about? That would be Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam and Mabel Mora, who in season one discover a shared love of true-crime podcasts following a grisly death in the Arconia. Convinced it’s murder, the trio take matters into their own hands – and start recording their very own podcast, ‘Only Murders In The Building’, to document their investigation.

Anyone good in it?

Oh, yes. Steve Martin – also the show’s co-creator – is actor Charles, most famous for 90s detective drama ‘Brazzos’. Steve’s long-time comedy cohort Martin Short is Oliver, a flamboyant, struggling theatre director. And Selena Gomez is Mabel, an artist renovating her aunt’s flat. Regulars include Tina Fey as Cinda Canning, host of the trio’s fave podcast, and Nathan Lane as Teddy Dimas, an old pal of Oliver’s. Season two adds model and actor Cara Delevingne to the cast as new resident Alice, a sophisticated art-world insider.

Is it funny?

Yes! There are some fab one-liners, plus Martin and Steve have some great slapstick moments. But the crime elements of the story actually work, too. Think a US TV version of Richard Osman’s

Thursday Murder Club novels.

So where does the story take the three of them in season two? The president of the Arconia Board, Bunny Folger, had been trying to have the trio evicted – and after last season closed with her shock death and the amateur sleuths arrested for the crime, this series revolves around them exonerating themselves by finding her real killer. Oh, and the sleuthing trio are also the subject of a competing podcast – hosted by one Cinda Canning…
