Teenager held in secure unit after attack with axe

‘Victim’s family entitled to see thug’s sentencing’

An interim hospital order has been made for a teenager who attacked an elderly pensioner with an axe during a robbery.

The order on Bradley Webb – who can be named for the first time – will last for 12 weeks, during which time his mental health will be assessed.

The 18-year-old, of Mayfair Avenue, Maidstone, admitted attempting to murder and rob Valerie White, 79, at her home in the town on February 2.

The victim needed hospital treatment for head injuries from the weapon wielded by Webb.

He stole her cash card and jewellery.

Prosecutor John O’Higgins told Maidstone Crown Court two neighbours bravely followed the teenager and detained him.

It was the second time in two weeks that the pensioner had been hospitalised by an intruder at her Campbell Road house.

On that occasion the culprit broke her nose as he barged into her home before demanding money.

Judge Jeremy Carey praised Mrs White’s courage at an earlier hearing after being told she had recovered and returned to her home.

“She is made of stern stuff,” he said. “Anybody who is willing to go back to the home where she was attacked is tough indeed and I commend her.

“This is a very grave case – a very serious case indeed. An elderly lady almost murdered with an intent to kill her.”

Reports from two psychiatrists stated they believed Webb was suffering from a mental disorder.

The teenager, who could not be identified until after his 18th birthday in September, has been detained in a secure unit.

He will now be moved to a hospital in Norwich within 28 days.

Judge Carey said the victim’s family was entitled to be present when Webb returns to court to be sentenced on January 29, next year.

“Those who have been affected badly by this extreme violence should have their voice heard,” he added.
