Kent Messenger Maidstone

Long in the memory

-

when Collin gave United a dream start in just the second minute.

Alex Flisher flicked on Lee Worgan’s clearance into the path of Jay May and when Chris Day could only parry, Collin tucked away the loose ball.

The expected response from Stevenage never really materialised.

They did force a decent save when Worgan got down well to keep out Lee Barnard’s header, while ex-Gillingham man Chris Whelpdale fired over when through.

Other than that, Stones were comfortable and Boro keeper Chris Day looked nervous every time the ball went into his box.

He should have done better with May’s strike in the build-up to Stones’ opener and it seemed to be playing on his mind.

He was saved by referee Simon Hooper when under pressure from May at Flisher’s inswinging corner, otherwise Maidstone would have scored.

United’s best chance of adding to their lead before half-time saw Flisher denied by Ronnie Henry as he ran on to Jack Parkinson’s pass.

Not conceding early in the second half no doubt featured in Saunders’ half-time team-talk but Boro were back on terms on 47 minutes.

It was a goal Stones would have been disappointed with against a Ryman League side, with Charlie Lee working room for a cross that was finished by the unmarked Darius Charles.

The equaliser triggered a good spell for Westley’s men.

Stones looked a little rattled but cleared their heads and it took a smart block from Day to keep out Coyle from Collin’s pass.

Stevenage continued to enjoy decent possession but Maidstone remained a threat on the break, particularly when they found Flisher.

Boro missed a big chance to nick a winner when Worgan came off his line to block with his legs with Whelpdale through on goal.

Seconds later the ball was down the other end and Collin settled an incredible night. Maidstone: Worgan, Simpson, Mills, Coyle, Miles, Rogers, Bodkin ( Greenhalgh 78mins), Parkinson, May, Collin ( Brown, 89mins), Flisher. Subs not used: Jordan, Robertson, Davies, Kitt, Godmon. Attendance: 2,226.
